ZebraDesigner Label Software Guide
ZebraDesigner is Zebra's own Windows software for designing barcode labels, tags and wristbands for Zebra industrial, desktop and mobile printers. You can start from a ready-made template or a blank label, then print fixed text or data that changes from label to label. The interface is familiar to anyone who has used Windows, so most teams are printing without formal training.
ZebraDesigner is part of Zebra DNA for Printers, the software and tools that come with Zebra printers. The current version is ZebraDesigner 3, which comes in three editions. Two are free; Professional is unlocked with a one-time license key.

Who should buy ZebraDesigner Professional
Essentials handles everyday labels. Upgrade to Professional when your labels need to:
- Print from a database: connect a label to an ODBC data source or an ASCII/text file, and choose which records to print when you print.
- Calculate or transform data: use formulas and simple VB script to build field values instead of typing them.
- Combine fields: concatenate several data fields into one barcode or text object.
- Encode RFID: use the RFID wizard to print and encode RFID labels and tags on RFID-capable Zebra printers.
The GS1-128 wizard is included in both Essentials and Professional, so you don't need Professional for GS1-128 alone.
System requirements and printer drivers
- Operating systems: Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025.
- Drivers: ZebraDesigner 3 prints through the ZDesigner Windows printer drivers, versions 5 and 10.
- ZDesigner driver v10: Zebra's recommended driver for new label formats, using ZPL on Link-OS printers. It is also required for Bluetooth printing.
- ZDesigner driver v5: use it for existing formats and for printers that run EPL or CPCL.
Upgrading from ZebraDesigner 2
ZebraDesigner 3 is backward compatible with ZebraDesigner 2. Open your existing .lbl label files in version 3, then save them in the version 3 .nlbl format.
License key notes
- One license per computer: install ZebraDesigner on each computer that will design or print. One Professional license activates Professional on one installation, and anyone using that computer can use it.
- What the license is: a ZebraDesigner Professional 3 license is a Customer ID plus a License Key. You can activate it during or after the 30-day trial.
- Moving to a new computer: install the latest version on the new computer, deactivate the license on the old computer, then activate it on the new one.
- License numbers starting with 3467: these older licenses (versions 3.2.2.x and earlier) still work on computers where they are already activated. Since July 2025 they can no longer be activated, deactivated or reset. Zebra issues a replacement Customer ID and License Key free of charge: use Zebra support to move the software, or the Zebra license reset form for a reset.

ZebraDesigner FAQ
Is ZebraDesigner free?
ZebraDesigner Essentials and ZebraDesigner for Developers are free downloads from Zebra. ZebraDesigner Professional needs a one-time activation license key, which BarcodeSupplies sells for $295 per computer.
What is the difference between ZebraDesigner Essentials and Professional?
Essentials covers basic barcode label design: native fonts and barcodes, Unicode, the GS1-128 wizard, and data entry at print time. Professional adds ODBC and ASCII file database connections, picking database records at print time, simple VB script and formulas, field concatenation, and the RFID wizard.
Where do I download ZebraDesigner 3?
Download every edition from Zebra at www.zebra.com/zebradesigner. Professional uses the same download and is unlocked with a license key.
What does a ZebraDesigner Professional 3 license key look like?
It is a Customer ID plus a License Key. Enter both to activate Professional, either during the 30-day trial or after it ends.
Can I use one ZebraDesigner Professional license on several computers?
No. ZebraDesigner is installed on each computer, and one license activates Professional on one installation. Any user of that computer can use it.
How do I move my ZebraDesigner license to a new computer?
Install the latest version of ZebraDesigner on the new computer, deactivate the license on the old computer, then activate it on the new one.
My ZebraDesigner license number starts with 3467. What should I do?
Licenses starting with 3467 (versions 3.2.2.x and earlier) keep working where they are already activated. Since July 2025 they can no longer be activated, deactivated or reset. Zebra provides a free replacement Customer ID and License Key through its support community: use the contact support form to move the software, or the license reset form for a reset.
I lost my ZebraDesigner license key. How do I recover it?
Keep your license key (Customer ID plus License Key) somewhere safe. For licenses on version 3.3.x and the Thales Sentinel licensing platform, Zebra asks you to contact the reseller you bought from. If you bought your license from BarcodeSupplies.com, email sales@barcodesupplies.com.
Will my ZebraDesigner 2 labels open in ZebraDesigner 3?
Yes. ZebraDesigner 3 is backward compatible with ZebraDesigner 2 and opens .lbl files, which you can save in the version 3 .nlbl format.
Which printer driver should I use with ZebraDesigner 3?
Use the ZDesigner Windows driver v10 for new label formats in ZPL on Link-OS printers; Bluetooth printing also needs v10. Use the ZDesigner driver v5 for existing formats and for EPL or CPCL printers.
What operating systems does ZebraDesigner 3 support?
Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025.
