What is the difference between the ZD421c, ZD421d and ZD421t?
The ZD421d is direct thermal only, so it needs no ribbon. The ZD421t takes standard 300 m or 74 m ribbon rolls. The ZD421c loads a 74 m ribbon cartridge in seconds, and a smart chip reports when it needs replacing. The ZD421t and ZD421c also print direct thermal without a ribbon.
Which Zebra printers does the ZD421 replace?
Zebra positions the ZD421 as the successor to the GK Series and ZD420 Series desktop printers.
What can it print in a hospital or clinic?
Prescription labels, lab and specimen labels, patient ID wristbands, blood and IV bag labels, patient record labels and asset labels.
What roll size and core fit?
Rolls up to 5 in outer diameter on 0.5 in or 1 in cores, and 1.5, 2 or 3 in cores with optional adapters.
What connectivity does it have?
Every ZD421 has USB 2.0 and USB Host, plus Bluetooth LE for the Zebra setup app. Ethernet, Serial and dual-radio Wi-Fi with Bluetooth are available by model or as field-installable kits.
Which programming languages does it support?
ZPL II, EPL 2, XML, ZBI and PDF Direct. The Zebra DNA Printer Emulations app adds languages from other printer brands.
What ribbons does it take?
Standard 300 m (984 ft) ribbons on 1 in cores, or 74 m (243 ft) ribbons on 0.5 in cores, 1.33 to 4.3 in wide. Wax, wax-resin and resin ribbons are available for different label materials.
Can it run on battery?
Yes. An optional 2750 mAh battery powers a full shift at maximum print speed, and an optional carrying case takes the printer to the point of application.

Should I choose 203 dpi or 300 dpi?
203 dpi (8 dots/mm) is the standard for shipping labels, barcodes and most product labels. 300 dpi (12 dots/mm) prints sharper small text, small barcodes, 2D codes and logos, so it suits small labels such as electronics, healthcare and jewelry labels. 600 dpi (24 dots/mm) is for very small, high-detail labels.
